Women’s Fencing Enjoys Unbeaten Day at Sacred Heart Invitational

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Harvard women's fencing team posted a perfect 5-0 record today, Dec. 5, at the Sacred Heart Invitational in Fairfield, Conn. 
 
The Crimson left no doubt on the strips today to improve to 8-0 on the season.
 
Harvard started each match trailing 3-0 due to injury within the sabre squad.
 
In the first match against Vassar College, the Crimson dominated, winning 24-3 with perfect 9-0 performances from the foil and epee squads to cruise to the victory. Harvard won each bout in the match, having to forfeit three bouts due to injury.
 
The next match was another win, this time outlasting Penn State, 14-12. Harvard enjoyed a 2-0 showing from Elizabeth Tartakovsky to help push them over the edge. Lauren Scruggs and Cynthia Liu won the clinching bouts for the Crimson to grab the victory.
 
The third match of the day was a 23-4 triumph for the Crimson over the hosts Sacred Heart, losing only one bout aside from the three that were forfeited due to injury. The foil and epee squads had another 9-0 performance to improve their already impressive day, outscoring the opponents. Foil members Annora Lee and Ever Marinelli both won three straight bouts without surrendering a touch against the Pioneers, the foil squad outscored their opponents 45-2 overall.
 
Harvard then bested Temple 19-8 in its fourth match of the day. Tartakovsky, Marinelli and Emily Vermeule all went 3-0 for their respective squads to keep the Crimson rolling. 
 
The finale of the invitational was a hard-fought victory over NYU, 17-10. Five Crimson athletes went unbeaten in the match (Tartakovsky, Wang, Vermeule, Lee and Claire Beddingfield) and Harvard earned a win to stay unbeaten on the day.
 

Harvard Highlights

  • The Crimson foil squad went 36-9 on the day, the epee squad finished 35-10 and the sabre squad posted a 26-18 record.
  • Tartakovsky led the way for Harvard with a touch differential of +53 on the day, outscoring her opponents 70-17 in her sabre bouts en route to a 14-0 record on the day.
  • Beddingfield posted a +26-touch differential outscoring her opponents 62-33 with a record of 11-2 throughout the five matches for the epee
  • Vermeule tallied a record of 14-1 throughout the day with a +38-touch differential. 


Up Next

  • Next weekend, Dec. 9-12, the Crimson will send 15 athletes to the North American Cup in Columbus, Ohio, to compete against some of the country's top fencers in an individual competition. The Crimson will travel as a team again on Jan. 22, to Jamaica, N.Y., where they will compete in a meet hosted by St. John's University.
