Fencing Duo Completes Action at 2020 Tokyo Olympics

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard fencing duo of Eli Dershwitz '19 and volunteer assistant coach Nicole Ross completed their journeys at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with the team competition over the last two days.

A two-time NCAA champion and Olympian, Dershwitz and the United States sabre team dropped a pair of matches before having to forfeit the seventh-place match due to injury. The Americans were on the wrong end of a 45-36 score against Hungary in the quarterfinals before falling to the Islamic Republic of Iran by an identical score in the classification round. The U.S. ultimately finished in eighth place in the team standings.

Ross and the United States foil team, meanwhile, opened with a 45-36 quarterfinal victory over Japan, but came up short in the semifinals against the Russian Olympic Committee, 45-42. Despite the setback, Team USA still had a chance to earn a bronze medal, but was outscored by Italy, 45-23. For Ross, a two-time Olympian, the fourth-place team performance was a personal best as the foil squad came in sixth during the 2012 London Games.

Dershwitz and Ross both competed individually prior to the team competition and finished in ninth (sabre) and 12th (foil), respectively.
