No. 11 Men’s Water Polo Set to Begin Season with Bruno Classic

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The No. 11 Harvard men's water polo team will open its season with a quartet of games from Sept. 4-5 at the Bruno Classic. The Crimson will host eight games of the tournament at Blodgett Pool across the two days. The Crimson will meet Mercyhurst at 10:15 a.m. and Fordham at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Harvard returns on Sunday to take on Wagner College at 10:15 a.m. and Austin College at 12:45 p.m. All games will be broadcast on ESPN+.

What to Know
  • In the CWPA Preseason National Top 20 Poll, Harvard checks in at No.11 in the nation. Other East Coast programs in the rankings include No. 14 Princeton, No. 17 Bucknell, No. 18 Brown, No. 19 Navy, and No. 20 Fordham.
  • This is the seventh appearance for Harvard in the Bruno Classic, and the fourth year that they will host games for the event.
  • Harvard returns to competition for the first time since the program played against Bucknell on Nov. 30, 2019 – a span of 644 days.
  • In 2019, Harvard posted a 29-1 overall record and a 10-0 mark in NWPC play.
  • Harvard returns three of its top five goal scorers from the 2019 season, with junior Alex Tsotadze, sophomore Kaleb Archer, and senior Jackson Enright notching 56, 43, and 42 goals respectively.
  • Harvard returns its top two assist leaders from 2019 with junior Michael Sonsini and sophomore Alexandru Bucur who tallied 66 and 40 respectively.
  • Junior goalie Noah Hodge returns coming off a 254 save season which saw him earn MVP of the NWPC Tournament and All-America honorable mention.
  • Two classes of Harvard student-athletes will suit up for the Crimson for the first time as both the class of 2024 and class of 2025 will see their first game action.
  • The Crimson holds a record of 12-11 in the Bruno Classic.
 
At the Helm
Ted Minnis enters his 11th year as The Friends of Harvard Water Polo Head Coach in 2021-22. He led the Crimson to a historic 29-1 record in 2019, with an undefeated 27-0 mark through regular season play. Minnis was named NWPC Coach of the Year following the record-breaking season which set the program record for consecutive wins.  He holds a record of 200-113 (.639) with the men's team through 10 seasons.
 
Next Up
Harvard travels to Princeton, N.J. to compete in the Princeton Invitational from Sept. 11-12. The Crimson will play Saturday at 10:30 a.m. against Wagner College before a 6:00 p.m. contest against Bucknell University. The Crimson's time at the tournament will conclude Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m. when it takes on George Washington University. DeNunzio Pool will host all games.
