Sailing Tacks on Two Wins, Brings Total to Three for Season

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – It was a successful weekend for Harvard sailing as the team claimed a pair of victories at the Hoyt Trophy and Harvard Invitational, bringing its win total to three on the season. In addition to the two wins, the Crimson's weekend also involved a fourth-place result at the Hood Trophy and seventh place at the women's only Mrs. Hurst Bowl.

In Providence, R.I., the Hoyt Trophy came down to the ninth and final race, with Harvard surging past host Brown to finish atop the standings courtesy of high finishes by both Crimson boats. In the A-division, skipper Eli Burnes and crew Tyler Masuyama came in third in the last race of the day, while teammates Henry Burnes and Christopher Wang won the final race in the B-division. These crucial results were just enough to put the Crimson on top with 92 points overall, five ahead of second place Brown. Henry Burnes and Wang ended the regatta as the top-ranked boat in the B-division with 35 points, while Eli Burns combined with Masuyama and Pomaika'i Ogata to rank fifth in the A-division.

"Both boats sailed well," assistant coach Bern Noack said. "They did a really good job with speed and boat handling, especially considering the wind shifts on Sunday. They didn't have a great weekend on the starting line but were able to overcome that by sailing the shifts well."

The team's second win of the weekend came at Harvard's own invitational, where a total of four Crimson boats competed on the Charles. In the end, the duo of first-year skipper Sophia Montgomery and sophomore crew Lily Bartlett took first in the combined divisions regatta with 45 points, including two first-place finishes. Dylan Ascencios and Emily Launderville (fifth, 54 points), Marleigh Belsley and Cassia Lee (seventh, 62 points) and Paul Kuechler and Katherine Barkin (12th, 114 points) were also a part of the home action for the Crimson.

Other standout performers from the weekend include sophomore Lachlain McGranahan and junior Cassia Lee, who racked up four first-place finishes in a total of seven races entered at the Hood Trophy. The tandem's boat ranked second in the B-division and helped power the Crimson to a fourth-place finish as a team.

Up Next:
The team returns to action next weekend, Oct. 2-3, for the Danmark Trophy, Lark Invitational and round one of the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship.
