CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 15 Harvard field hockey (11-4, 4-1 Ivy) will honor its historic senior class –
Kiley Allen,
Elizabeth Denehy,
Olivia Hoover, and
Ellie Shahbo - on Saturday (Oct. 29) when it hosts No. 24 Cornell (9-6, 3-2 Ivy) at Berylson Field in an 11 a.m. contest on ESPN+.
WHAT TO KNOW
- Harvard was narrowly edged at Princeton on Sunday afternoon, nearly rallying from a three goal deficit before ultimately falling, 4-2, to the Tigers. Sophomore Emily Guckian and junior Siofra Murdoch scored for the Crimson and senior goalkeeper Ellie Shahbo made three saves.
- Seniors Kiley Allen (captain), Elizabeth Denehy, Olivia Hoover (captain), and Ellie Shahbo (captain) will be honored in a pregame ceremony. They all arrived in Cambridge during the summer of 2018 and will leave having set a new standard of excellence for Harvard Field Hockey. They have compiled a record of 58-12 in three-plus seasons, including a 24-2 record in Ivy games, and a 31-3 mark in home contests. They helped lead Harvard to two Ivy League titles (2018, 2021), two NCAA Tournament appearances (2018, 2021), three NCAA Tournament wins, and the program's first appearance in the NCAA Semifinals last season.
- Senior goalkeeper Ellie Shahbo will leave Harvard as the winningest goalkeeper in program history. She has compiled 49 wins in three-plus seasons. She now has a career 0.78 goals-against average and a .783 save percentage. Shahbo was one of 38 seniors named to the NFHCA Senior Team last week.
- Harvard's defense has put together another solid year in 2022, holding opponents to a 1.09 goals-against average, eighth among NCAA schools and No. 1 among all Ivy programs.
- Ten different players have recorded a goal for the Crimson so far this season, a group led by first-year back Bronte-May Brough (nine goals, assist), senior captain Olivia Hoover (four goals, assist), and junior Siofra Murdoch (four goals, assist) Junior Mazarine Broze (two goals, eight assists) and sophomore Emily Guckian (two goals, eight assists) have also been top point scorers for Harvard.
- Harvard leads the all-time series against Cornell, 30-13-4, and has won the last five meetings dating back to 2016. This will mark Cornell's first visit to Harvard since the 2018 season. Last year, Harvard clinched a share of the 2021 Ivy League title and an NCAA Tournament berth with a 3-1 win at Cornell on Oct. 30, 2021, with then-senior Hannah Pearce scoring twice, and Olivia Hoover adding a goal for the Crimson.
- Harvard is coming off its seventh appearance at the NCAA Tournament and sixth Ivy League title after finishing the 2021 season at 17-2 (7-0 Ivy). Returning to play in 2021 after a missed season due to the pandemic, Harvard made the NCAA Semifinals for the first time in program history, matching a program record for wins on the year. Harvard also beat its highest ranked opponent ever, defeating No. 2 Michigan in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
