USAF ACADEMY, Col. – Harvard women's fencing went a perfect 6-0 in day one of the Air Force Western Invitational, their first action of the 2022-23 season.
Harvard began the day with a huge 21-6 win against the University of Incarnate Ward. Starting the epee match down 3-0 due to a forfeit, sophomore
Emily Vermeule and first-year
Faith Park battled their way to an impressive 5-4 victory. Both foil and sabre also started off strong, going 8-1 in their matches.
In their second match, the Crimson defeated the University of North Carolina 20-7. Foil let the team in this match, going 8-1 led by sophomore
Lauren Scruggs who went 3-0 in the match and only allowed four touches.
Next, Harvard defeated Northwestern University 17-10. Scruggs again provided a huge boost, earning another three wins in the foil match, helping foil win 8-1.
The Crimson's closest match of the day was their fourth match against Stanford University. However, three wins from junior
Annora Lee in the foil match and two wins from senior captain
Elizabeth Tartakovsky and first year
Zoe Kim helped propel Harvard to a 15-12 victory.
In their fifth match, Ohio State as proved to be a tough opponent. Another 3-0 outing from Scruggs and a 3-0 outing from Tartakovsky helped push the Crimson over the egde and earn their fifth victory of the day 16-11.
The Crimson finished strong in their last match of the day, defeating the University of California San Diego 17-10.
