Women’s Fencing to Compete in Ivy League Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 5 Harvard women's fencing team (11-2) will travel to Providence, R.I., for the Ivy League Championship Round Robins this weekend from Feb. 12-13.
 
The Crimson placed fourth in its last time competing at the event in 2020.
 
Harvard will compete in the first three rounds on Saturday, Feb. 12, and compete in the final three rounds on Sunday, Feb. 13.
 
In round one at 10 a.m., the Crimson will face off with No. 10 Yale. Harvard trails 24-20 in the series starting in 1976, but has won 16 consecutive matches against the Bulldogs since 2006.
 
At 11:15 a.m., the Crimson will take on No. 4 Cornell in the second round. The Big Red come into the match sporting a 32-0 record on the season. Harvard holds a 30-9 advantage in the all-time series, with the first meeting coming in 1977. The Crimson is on a 25-game win streak over the Big Red with its last loss coming in 1991.
 
Closing out day one, the Crimson will play the hosts, Brown, in the third round. Since 1980, Harvard has won 29 of 33 matchups the Bears, including 12 consecutive meetings.
 
After a break during round four, Harvard will return to the strips for a fifth-round matchup on Sunday morning at 10 a.m., against No. 11 Penn. The Crimson trail the series against the Quakers, 24-17, but have won nine of the last 12 meetings.
 
Next up for Harvard at 11:15 a.m., is No. 1 Princeton in round six. The Crimson will look for its first win over Princeton since 2016. In the 2020 Ivy League Championships, the Tigers came out victorious 17-10 on their way to a second-place finish.
 
Wrapping up the weekend, the Crimson will play defending champion and No. 3 Columbia at 1 p.m., in the seventh and final round of action. Harvard will get a chance to avenge the 15-12 loss they suffered to the Lions in January at the St. John's Invitational. Columbia holds the edge in the all-time series 39-10, with the last Harvard win coming in 2019.

  • Veronica Czyzewski led all Crimson fencers in the 2020 Ivy League Championships, posting a 14-4 record with a +33-touch differential.
  • Maria Theodore returns after going 11-7 with a +18-touch differential in the 2020 championships.
  • Karina Wang had a great Ivy League tournament last time out, fencing to a 13-5 record with a +24-touch differential.

At the Helm

Daria Schneider is in her third year as head coach of the Harvard men's and women's fencing programs in 2021-22. In her first season as head coach, Schneider led the men's team to a program record 20 dual wins and an outright Ivy League Championship. She led the women's team to the NCAA regionals where four fencers placed in the top 10.

The Crimson will prepare for the NCAA regionals the weekend of March 11, at a location to be determined.
