CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard women's fencing program will send five athletes to the 2022 National Collegiate Women's Fencing Championships from March 24-27, in Notre Dame, Ind., the committee announced today.
The Crimson will send
Emily Vermeule and
Greta Candreva from the epee squad,
Lauren Scruggs and
Annora Lee from the foil team, and
Elizabeth Tartakovsky as the lone representative for the sabre team.
This is Harvard's first trip back to the NCAA Championships since 2019, because of the cancellation in 2020 and the Crimson not competing for a full season in 2021.
At the NCAA Northeast Regionals, a week ago, the Crimson trio of Vermeule, Scruggs and Tartakovsky swept the gold medal in all three weapons for the first time in both men's and women's competitions, since regional champions were first crowned in 2013.
Women's Epee
Emily Vermeule
- NCAA Northeast Regional Women's Epee Champion.
- Was ranked No. 6 in the Northeast before regionals.
- Won the gold medal by posting a 18-5 record with a +47-touch differential on the day.
- Vermeule held a 47-20 record throughout the regular season and is heading into the championships with a 65-25 overall mark.
Greta Candreva
- NCAA Northeast Regional - 4th place.
- Was ranked No. 7 in the Northeast before regionals.
- Finished fourth by tallying a 17-6 record with a +41-touch differential.
- Candreva held a 48-24 record across the regular season and is entering the championships with a 65-30 overall mark.
Women's Foil
Lauren Scruggs
- NCAA Northeast Regional Women's Foil Champion.
- Was ranked No. 4 in the Northeast before regionals.
- Won the gold medal after a 21-2 showing with a +54-touch differential.
- Scruggs held a 36-12 record throughout the regular season and carries a 57-14 mark into the championships.
Annora Lee
- NCAA Northeast Regional - 5th place.
- Was ranked No. 5 in the Northeast before regionals.
- In the regionals, recorded a 13-10 record with a +22-touch differential to secure fifth place.
- Lee held a 31-20 record throughout the year and will head to the championships with a 44-30 tally.
Women's Sabre
Elizabeth Tartakovsky
- NCAA Northeast Regional Women's Sabre Champion.
- Was ranked No. 4 in the Northeast before regionals.
- At the regionals, used a 20-3 record with a +46-touch differential to earn the gold medal and advance to the championships.
- Tartakovsky was 54-17 across the regular season and will head into the championships holding a 74-20 mark.
- This will be Tartakovsky's second appearance at the NCAA Championships (2019). She finished tied for third after posting a 19-4 record and a +43-touch differential.
