Harvard Heavies fall to Bulldogs in 155th Harvard-Yale Regatta

GALES FERRY, Conn. – The Harvard Heavyweight Rowing team (6-1) gave it their all on the Thames River today in the 155th Harvard-Yale Regatta. The Crimson rowed strong despite falling in all three races to the Bulldogs this afternoon. The Harvard season back on the water since 2019 has now come to an end.

The action started with the third varsity (3V) boats competing in a two-mile race. Harvard took an early lead off the start, building a five-seat lead at the one-mile marker. The Elis finally took control of the lead after a mile and a quarter. The Crimson could not regain the lead, eventually falling to the Bulldogs by just 5.2 seconds. This was the closest finish in the 3V race since 2015 (Yale, 4.3). The Crimson 3V boat ends the season with a 6-1 record.

In the three-mile second varsity (2V) race, Harvard once again took the lead off the start. Harvard controlled the lead for one and a quarter miles in the race, until they were eventually passed by the Elis close to the halfway marker. The Bulldogs cruised to through the finish, putting open water between the boats. Despite posting its best time since 2011 (13:44.9), the 2V crew fell to the Elis by a 19-second margin.

The first varsity crew was next on the water in the final race of the regatta, a four-mile run down the Thames. The Crimson and Elis were neck and neck off the start of the race, but it was Yale who held a six-seat lead after the first mile. The Crimson remained within striking distance at the halfway point, as the boat was right behind the pace set by Yale. The Bulldog crew turned it up a notch at the three0mile mark, putting open water between them and the Crimson. Harvard's final time of 18:42.1 was not enough to overcome Yale, who went on to capture the Sexton Cup with a time of 18:17.5.

The completion of the regatta wrapped up the 2022 season for the Crimson, who finished the year with a 6-1 record.
