QUEENS, NY. – Harvard women's fencing competed at the St. John's Invitational on Saturday, January 21 at St. John's University, going 0-5 on the day after forfeiting 30 total matches due to injury.
The Crimson began the day in a tightly contest match against Penn State. The sabre squad led the way with a 6-3 win after
Elizabeth Tartakovsky,
Chloe Williams, and
Maria Theodore each racked up two wins. However, the Crimson narrowly fell 12-15.
Harvard went up against Ivy League rival Columbia in their second match.
Elizabeth Tartakovsky had another impressive performance, winning all three of her bouts in this matchup. However, despite their best efforts, Harvard would fall 9-18.
In their third matchup Harvard would fall to Notre Dame 3-24.
The Crimson faced Ohio State in their fourth matchup of the Invitational. Harvard would play the match down 6-0 due to forfeiture from injuries. The hurdle was too tall to come back from as the Buckeyes defeated the Crimson 7-20.
Harvard regained their stride in the final matchup of the day against the hosts, St. Johns. Both the foil and sabre squad were able to win their matchups 5-4. However, injuries would force the Crimson to hand St. John's 15 out of the 27 bouts, giving the Red Wave the win 10-17.
Harvard Highlights
- Annora Lee's (foil) 10 wins on the day led the team.
- Elizabeth Tartakovsky (sabre), who had nine wins on the day, also impressed.
- Harvard has achieved 15 wins so far this season, already matching their win total from last season.
Individual Action
- Three women's fencers, Faith Park (epee), Lauren Scruggs (foil) and Zoe Kim (sabre), competed in international competitions over the weekend.
- Park earned a silver medal at the Junior World Cup in Israel.
- Kim won the bronze medal at the Junior World Cup in Segovia, Spain.
- Scruggs won gold in the Junior World Cup Team event in Sagreb, Croatia.
