Women’s Fencing Captures Beanpot For 16th Consecutive Year

WALTHAM, MASS. – Harvard women's fencing is the Beanpot champion for a 16th year in a row, sweeping Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brandeis and Boston College at the Gosman Athletic Center. Three women fencers finished the night undefeated at the Beanpot, as Lauren Scruggs, Jessica Guo and Emily Vermeule all finished the day 9-0. Scruggs now has an 18-0 record in three Beanpot appearances.
 
The Crimson opened with a 19-8 victory against MIT, with women's foil leading the way with eight wins against the Engineers. Women's epee also picked up seven wins, with Vermeule taking three wins along with Faith Park and Isabella Chin each earning two victories. In women's saber, Chloe Williams and Zoe Kim each won two contests.
 
Against the tournament host Brandeis, Harvard rolled to another 19-8 win. The epee trio picked up a team-high eight wins against the Judges, as Vermeule and Park each earned three victories in the second round of action. In women's saber, Zoe Kim posted a 3-0 record, while Scruggs and Guo each remained perfect on the day with three wins against Brandeis. 0
 
Harvard completed the sweep with a commanding 19-8 victory against Boston College. Kim and Williams both orchestrated undefeated records against the Eagles, as Chin added two wins in epee competition. Women's fencing finished the day with 57 wins at the Beanpot.

  • Harvard brings the Beanpot home to Cambridge for a 16th consecutive season.
  • Guo has now won 19 straight contests to start her Crimson fencing career.
  • Scruggs is 18-0 in her Beanpot career in three years.
