US AIR FORCE ACADEMY, CO. – Harvard women's fencing opened the 2023-24 season on a high note, registering a 4-1 record on the first day of the Western Invitational at the US Air Force Academy. The Crimson rolled to wins against Ohio State, Incarnate Word, Northwestern, and Stanford.
 
In the first match of the season, the women's program fought for a 15-12 win against Ohio State. The epee squad led the way with seven wins, as Faith Park picked up three wins against the Buckeyes. Saber fencer Zoe Kim also logged three victories against Ohio State.
 
The Crimson recorded its second win of the day against UIW, 16-10. Women's epee tallied 8 wins, as Lauren Scruggs and Eileen Ye both went perfect against the Cardinals.

Harvard came just short against top-ranked Notre Dame, losing 11-16. Women's epee went 6-3 against the Fighting Irish, as Emily Vermeule, Isabella Chin and Park all logged two wins. Scruggs added two more wins to her resume against Notre Dame.

Harvard bounced back with a dramatic 14-13 win against Northwestern. With the contest tied at 13, Vermeule picked up a huge victory to secure the win for Harvard. Women's foil contributed seven wins against the Wildcats.
 
The final match of the day saw the Crimson cruise to a 19-8 win against Stanford., Jessica Guo, Park, Vermuele, and Kim all went a perfect 3-0 against the Cardinal.
 
HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS:

• Women's fencing is 10-1 on the first day of the Western Invitational over the last two seasons.
• Foil led the women's team with 30 wins on Saturday.
• Epee posted 29 wins on day one of the Western Invitational.
• Chin and Guo earned the first wins of their Crimson careers.

The Crimson ends its time in Colorado with two more matches at the Western Invitational. Harvard faces tournament host Air Force and North Carolina before returning to Cambridge.
