CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Seniors
Elizabeth Tartakovsky (women's saber),
Mitchell Saron (men's saber), rising senior
Lauren Scruggs (women's foil), and assistant coach and graduate
Eli Dershwitz (men's saber) all were selected to participate in 2023 Senior World Championships with USA Fencing.
The four Harvard representatives will compete at the 2023 Pan-American Senior Championships, taking place from June 14–21 in Lima, Peru, and subsequently represent the USA at the 2023 FIE Fencing World Championships scheduled for July 22–30 in Milan, Italy.
Dershwitz, who won four individual Ivy League titles and two individual NCAA championships during his time at Harvard, has thrived on the international stage. He is a two-time United States Olympian (Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2021), U.S. national champion, world champion, and the only American men's saber fencer to ever finish a season ranked No. 1 in the world.
Tartakovsky capped off a decorated collegiate career as the Women's Sabre NCAA Championships Silver Medalist, on season after winning a national championship. She was First Team All-America and a First Team All-Northeast Region selection. She will be making her Senior World Championship debut.
Saron, who recently earned silver with Dershwitz as part of USA Fencing's team at the Madrid Men's Sabre World Cup, also recently completed a successful college career as a two-time All-American and Ivy champion.
Scruggs was the 2023 women's foil NCAA champion, the seventh NCAA individual champion in school history and the first Crimson women's foilist to win the title since Alexandra Kiefer in 2014. She is making her Senior World Team debut, and has an impressive junior record, including multiple individual and team gold medals at the Junior/Cadet World Championships.
