Third Day in the Books for Men’s Swimming and Diving at Minnesota Invite

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Harvard Men's Swimming and Diving surpassed the midway point today at the Minnesota Invitational, completing day three of four at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.

How It Happened in the Prelims

  • David Schmitt notched an NCAA B-standard time in the prelims of the 100 fly, coming in third place after finishing in 46.62. The sophomore made the A-final along with Aayush Deshpande (47.27) and Sonny Wang (47.43). Anthony Rincon just missed the A-final and instead earned the top seed in the B-final with a time of 47.50. Oliver Pilkinton (47.79) and Adriano Arioti (47.85) also made B-field.
  • In the 400 IM prelims, Harvard had three swimmers advance to the B-final in Dylan Rhee (3:54.32), Eric Lee (3:54.76) and Richard Poplawski III (3:55.67), and one to the C-final (Jonathan Novinski – 3:59.55).
  • David Greeley placed seventh in the prelims of the 200 free with a time of 1:36.22, securing a spot in the A-final. Moving on to the B-final were five Crimson athletes in Ben Littlejohn (1:36.98), Harris Durham (1:37.02), Tristan Dalbey (1:37.39), Marre Gattnar (1:37.59) and Shane Washart (1:37.59). Anders Aistars (1:38.05) and Felipe Baffico (1:38.59), meanwhile, qualified for the C-final.
  • Joshua Chen made the B-final of the 100 breast after recording the 11th-fastest time in the field (54.47). Rhee (54.98) and Zach Bartel (55.06) also advanced to the B-final, with Quinn Harron (55.17) set to compete in the C-final.
  • Rincon registered an NCAA B-standard in the 100 back with his fourth-place time of 46.58. Schmitt (47.44), Arioti (48.00), Pilkinton (48.15) and Gattnar (48.16) all qualified for the B-final. Deshpande (48.58) and Evan Croley (48.74), meanwhile, earned spots in the C-final.
  • Adam Wesson finished in third place in the prelims of the 3-meter diving competition, earning a score of 358.60. Jack Holland (297.00), Raphael Tourette (275.45) and Will Sullivan (season-best 269.75) came in seventh, 10th and 11th, respectively.

How It Happened in the Finals

  • Schmitt notched his second NCAA B-standard effort in as many tries today, finishing the A-final of the 100 fly in 46.26, which was good for third place. Wang and Desphande joined Schmitt in the final and came in fifth place (46.81) and seventh place (47.45), respectively. Pilkinton, meanwhile, won the B-final in 46.99, with Arioti (5th, 47.72) and Rincon (6th, 47.81) also competing.
  • Harvard took the first two spots of the 400 IM B-final as Poplawski (3:51.63) and Lee (3:51.69) finished atop the leaderboard. Rhee finished in sixth place (3:53.97). Novinski was the Crimson's lone swimmer in the C-final and finished second (3:56.87).
  • In the A-final of the 200 free, Greeley recorded the sixth-fastest time in the field (1:35.62) and just missed out on an NCAA B-cut (1:35.35). The B-final saw Littlejohn (1:36.42) and Washart (1:36.73) go 1-2, with Durham (1:37.55), Dalbey (1:37.81) and Aistars (1:38.88) finishing in fifth, sixth and eighth. Baffico, meanwhile, won the C-final in 1:38.05.
  • The B-final of the 100 breast featured four Harvard swimmers who ultimately finished among the top five. Chen ended the event atop the leaderboard at 54.49. Minnesota's Joe Polyak (54.61) was the lone athlete to prevent an all-Harvard top-4. Nonetheless, Harron (54.96), Bartel (55.00) and Rhee (55.09) went 3-4-5.
  • In the final individual event of the day, Rincon accomplished another NCAA B-cut by finishing the A-final of the 100 back in 46.82 to come in seventh. The Crimson had four swimmers in the B-race and they finished fifth through eighth place (Arioti – 47.64, Pilkinton – 47.64, Schmitt – 47.65, Gattnar – 48.02). Croley won the C-final in 47.75, with Deshpande coming in eighth (49.15).
  • Wesson and Holland were the only Harvard athletes to compete in the final of the 3-meter diving event. Wesson finished in third place (358.50) and Holland was eighth (312.05).
  • The Crimson wrapped up its night by finishing third in the 400 medley relay. Rincon, Chen, Schmitt and Greeley turned in a time of 3:09.97.

Harvard returns to action at the Minnesota Invitational tomorrow at 11 a.m. ET (swimming prelims). Diving prelims are slated for 2 p.m. ET and all finals are scheduled for a 7 p.m. ET start.
