NEW YORK, N.Y. – Harvard women's fencing completed day one action at the 2024 Ivy League Fencing Championships, as the Crimson went 2-1 on the day with victories against Cornell and Brown in round robin action. Harvard sits in third place after the first phase of the competition in New York, N.Y., trailing only Columbia and Princeton.
Due to international commitments, Harvard was without standout foil fencers
Jessica Zi Jia Guo and
Lauren Scruggs. The pair is competing in Europe this weekend, taking part in the Foil Grand Prix in Turin, Italy.
The Crimson started the 2024 Ivy League Fencing Championships on a high note, earning a 15-12 win against Cornell. The women's epee and saber squads orchestrated 6-3 records against the Big Red, as sophomore saber fencer
Zoe Kim and junior epee fencer
Emily Vermeule each went undefeated in the first round of action in New York.
In the second contest of the day against Princeton, Harvard came up short, losing to the Tigers, 11-16.
Harvard closed day one of the Ivy League Fencing Championships strong, defeating Brown, 17-10. Women's epee dominated against the Bears, posting an 8-1 record, the most wins for a Harvard weapon on the day. Sophomore
Faith Park and first-year
Isabella Chin each went undefeated against Brown. Kim also tallied three wins in the last match of the day, moving her record to 8-1 at this year's Ivy League Fencing Championships.
Kim and Vermeule both shined on day one of the Ivy League Fencing Championships. Kim's 8-1 record is the best across all saber fencers at the competition, as her +18 touch-differential is the highest among all saber fencers as well. Vermeule is tied with Cornell's Ketki Ketkar for the most epee wins at the tournament with seven each, as the team captain's +18 touch differential leads all epee fencers as well.
