NEW YORK, N.Y. – Heading into the 2024 Ivy League Championships, the Crimson's undersized roster left them at a significant disadvantage. Despite having to forfeit six bouts per match, the Harvard women won two of the three individual titles and posted a strong showing across the board. Over the course of the weekend Harvard went 76 and 50, winning 60 percent of its bouts on the strip and boasting a +68 indicator.
The Crimson managed to secure wins against Cornell and Brown on day one of the Championships, but faced close defeats against Princeton, Penn, Yale, and Columbia, ending the tournament with a 2-4 record.
The second day saw the Crimson open against Penn. Junior and captain
Emily Vermeule earned a 3-0 record and led the women's epee squad to a 6-3 record for the match. Despite winning 12 of the 21 matches fenced it wasn't enough to make up for the 6 forfeits and Harvard fell to the Quakers 15-12.
Women's epee carried its momentum into the next two matches, going a combined 12-6 against the Lions and Bulldogs. Sophomore
Chloe Williams finished the day strong, going an undefeated 3-0 against a seasoned Columbia sabre squad. However, the Crimson's six forfeits continued to hamper the team and Harvard lost 17-10 to Yale and 16-11 to Columbia.
Individual performances were a highlight, with sophomore
Zoe Kim clinching the saber title with a 14-4 record and a weapon-high +29 touch differential. Vermeule took the epee title with a tournament-high in wins with a 15-3 record, the best across all weapons and both genders. Her +33 touch differential was the best among all Harvard fencers and all epee fencers, both men and women, at the tournament.
Kim and Vermeule both earned First Team All-Ivy League Honors, along with sophomore epee fencer
Faith Park.
