Sailing’s Meek Wins NEISA Singlehanded Title, Highlighting Successful Weekend

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Sailing's Robby Meek took home the Montotype Trophy at the NEISA Open Singlehanded Championship over the weekend in Providence, Rhode Island, highlighting a successful team-wide effort on the water.

At the NEISA Women's Singlehanded Championship, the Crimson had two sailors finish in the top five in Kate Danielson (2nd) and Sophia Montgomery (4th), with the Crimson also placing third at the Hatch Brown Trophy. Meanwhile at the Regis Trophy, Harvard logged a seventh-place performance, finishing in the upper half of the team standings.

NEISA Open Singlehanded Championship | Providence, R.I.

A year after posting a runner-up effort, Meek captured the NEISA Open Singlehanded Championship, finishing with 18 points, well clear of second-place Mathias Reimer of Yale (39). The sophomore opened Race 1 with an eighth-place performance, but rebounded to finish with a line score of 1-1-3-1-3-1 to take home the title. Meek was the only sailor in the 34-athlete field to post a single-digit finish in all seven races and received an automatic berth to the 2024 ICSA Open Singlehanded National Championship in St. Petersburg, Florida (Nov. 9-10) thanks to his victory. Harrison Strom also competed and came in 13th place (106), marking the fourth-best effort among first-years on the water.

NEISA Women's Singlehanded Championship | Providence, R.I.

Danielson, a first-year, ended the competition in second place with a score of 30, two points behind the victor Katharine Doble of Brown (28). Following a fourth-place finish in Race 1, Danielson ripped off three runner-up performances in her next four races. An 11th-place effort derailed her title dreams, but Danielson finished strong with a third-place finish in Race 7 to secure second place. Montgomery, meanwhile, returned to the water for the first time since her Paris Olympics appearance and came in fourth (34), finishing just a point behind Sarah Young of Dartmouth (33). The junior finished inside the top six in six of seven races (top 10 in all seven), including a win in Race 7.

Hatch Brown Trophy | Cambridge, Mass.

Harvard and Boston College tied for the third-best score (189), with the Crimson earning the edge in the team standings as a result of the number of high-place finishes. When the water settled, the top three consisted of Yale (128), Roger Williams (171) and Harvard. The Crimson A-boat of Justin Callahan and Kennedy Leehealey finished with a score of 73, logging eight top-10 performances. Mitchell Callahan and Alexandra Dorofeev, however, enjoyed the best regatta of Harvard's three boats, putting up a score of 57, which was aided by three first-place showings and one runner-up finish. Cordelia Burn and Margo Silliman, meanwhile, recorded a 59, following one win, two second-place performances and a third-place effort.

Regis Trophy | Cambridge, Mass.

In a regatta held at Harvard, but hosted by Boston University, the Crimson finished in seventh place with 165 points. Harvard was one of four teams bunched together between the fourth and seventh positions as Dartmouth, Brown, MIT and the Crimson were separated by just nine points. Yale (49) and Boston College (73) finished atop the leaderboard. Zoey Ziskind and Peyton Hadfield led the way for the Harvard in the A-boat, posting a score of 61 after seven top-five finishes, including a win in Race 4. Ziskind-Hadfield completed the 10-race event with the third-best score in the A-Division. Olivia Hogan-Lopez and Julia Downey (104), meanwhile, finished their day on the strong note, going 8-5-11-4 in their final four races after crossing the finish line among the top 10 just twice in their first six races.

Harvard will be all over New England this weekend, Sept. 21-22, when it competes in New London, Connecticut (NEISA Match Racing Championships), Providence, Rhode Island (Hoyt Trophy), Hanover, New Hampshire (Mrs. Hurst Bowl) and Medford, Massachusetts (Hood Trophy).
