Men's Heavyweight Rowing Set to Compete in 2025 HOCR

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard men's heavyweight rowing team is set to compete on its home waters this weekend at the 60th Head of the Charles Regatta, taking place Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 18–19, along the historic Charles River. The Crimson will field two eights in the Men's Club Eight race on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. ET, before returning to action on Sunday at 3:20 p.m. ET with three eights in the Championship Eight division—one of the Regatta's premier events.

WHAT TO KNOW

  • Defending Top Collegiate Crew: Harvard enters the weekend looking to extend its streak of excellence after recording the fastest collegiate time in the Championship Eight in each of the past two years. The Crimson have consistently been among the top finishers in one of the most competitive fields in international rowing.
  • A Milestone Regatta: This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Head of the Charles, the largest three-day rowing event in the world. The regatta annually attracts thousands of athletes, including elite international programs, collegiate powerhouses, and decorated alumni crews, all vying for course records and bragging rights on the winding 3-mile stretch from Boston University's DeWolfe Boathouse to the Eliot Bridge.
  • Veteran Leadership: Head Coach Charlie Butt leads the Crimson into his 41st season with Harvard rowing and 13th year guiding the heavyweight program, supported by assistant coaches Tom Siddall and Pat Lapage '12. Butt has built one of the nation's most consistent and respected programs, combining tradition with technical precision.
  • Riding Spring Momentum: Harvard is coming off a historic 2025 spring season, capped by a second-place finish in the Varsity Eight at the IRA National Championships and a victory at Eastern Sprints—the program's first since 2014.
  • Top Talent Returns: The Crimson roster features four returning IRCA All-Americans, each expected to play a major role this weekend.
