Cross Country Travels to Wisconsin, New York on Friday for Pair of Meets

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After impressing with a pair of top-10 team finishes at the Paul Short Run at the beginning of October, Harvard cross country looks to find more success at a pair of meets on Friday, Oct. 17.

One group of Crimson returns to Madison, Wisconsin and the Zimmer Championship Course for the Nuttycombe Invitational, the premier regular season meet in the nation. Select Crimson will travel to New York, New York for the ECAC/IC4A Championships at Van Cortlandt Park. The Nuttycombe Invitation will air live on RunnerSpace+.

The women's A race at the Nuttycombe Invitational will start at 11:50 a.m., while the men's A race begins at 12:30 p.m.

WHAT TO KNOW:
  • Harvard cross country returned to action with a bang at the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania earlier this month, as the men's team took fourth place while the women's team finished in ninth.
  • One of Harvard's team captains, junior Sam Burgess took center stage in the men's 8k gold race, crossing the finish line in first place with a time of 23:18.6. A native of Framingham, Massachusetts, Burgess is the first Crimson to win the men's 8k gold race since 2013.
  • Along with Burgess, first-year Tam Gavenas excelled in his collegiate debut, finishing in third place with a time of 23:20.1. Junior and team captain Charlie Ortmans joined Burgess and Gavenas in the top-10 by finishing in ninth place with a time of 23:26.0.
  • On the women's side, senior and team captain Molly Malague paced the Crimson's ninth place team finish in the women's 6k gold race by finishing in fifth place with a time of 19:48.2. Fellow classmate Penelope Salmon joined Malague in the top-25 by placing in 21st with a time of 20:20.3.
  • For their efforts at the Paul Short Run, Malague and Burgess both earned Ivy League Athlete of the Week honors for the first time this season.
  • In the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's latest National Coaches Poll, the men's team checked in at 28th.
  • Over the course of the 2024 season, Harvard competed at the Zimmer Championship Course on two occasions. At Pre-Nationals, the men's team took 10th place while the women's team finished in 22nd. The 2024 NCAA Cross Country Championships saw Graham Blanks '25 win his second NCAA National Championship as both teams finished in the top-30 in the team standings.
