Cross Country Sweeps Ivy League Weekly Awards

PRINCETON, N.J. – For the first time this season, Harvard cross country student-athletes earn Ivy League Athlete of the Week status, as junior Sam Burgess is the Ivy League's Men's Athlete of the Week, while senior Molly Malague is the Ivy League's Women's Athlete of the Week.

A native of Framingham, Massachusetts, Burgess was stellar in his season debut at the Paul Short Run. Running in the men's 8k gold race, Burgess stood out against a stacked field, winning the race with a time of 23:18.6. One of Harvard's team captains this season, Burgess is the first Crimson to win the men's 8k gold race since 2013, when James Leakos '14 did so with a time of 23:12.8. With Burgess' first place showing, the Crimson men took fourth in the team standings.

Malague, a Northeast All-Region and All-Ivy League First Team selection last season, shined in her season debut at the Paul Short Run, taking fifth place with a time of 19:48.2 in the women's 6k gold race. A native of Metuchen, New Jersey, Malague paced the Crimson to ninth place team finish.

Two meets await the Crimson next weekend, as Harvard will feature at the ECAC/IC4A Championships and the Nuttycombe Invitational on Friday, Oct. 17.
