Men’s Soccer’s Freese ’22 Makes Three PK Saves with U.S. Men’s National Team in Gold Cup Quarterfinals

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Harvard University men's soccer alumnus Matt Freese '22 made three saves in a penalty kick shootout to help the U.S Men's National Team advance past Costa Rica in the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup on Sunday as Freese and the U.S. remained undefeated through four matches at the tournament.
 
With the score tied at 2-2 following regulation, the match went directly to penalty kicks with Freese making stops on Costa Rica's second, fifth, and sixth attempts to allow the USMNT to advance with a 4-3 decision in penalties. Freese added one save in regulation during the quarterfinal matchup at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
 
Freese started and won all three of the USMNT's group stages matches at the Gold Cup. He made two saves in a 5-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago (June 15), one save in a 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia (June 19), and two saves in a 2-1 win over Haiti (June 22).
 
Alongside his start in his USMNT debut in a friendly against Turkey on June 7, Freese has now totaled five caps and two shutouts for the U.S. Men's National Team.
 
A 2018 Second Team All-Ivy selection at Harvard, Freese has played in Major League Soccer for the Philadelphia Union (2019-22) and New York City FC (2023-present). He earned Team MVP honors for NYC FC following the 2024 season.
 
The U.S. will meet Guatemala in the semifinals of the Gold Cup on Wednesday, July 2 at 7:00 p.m. ET (FS1) at Energizer Park in St. Louis, Mo.
