Softball Summer Spotlight: Sophie Sun

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – This summer, Sophie Sun worked as a Wealth Management Intern at Corient in their Newport Beach, CA office. She gained hands-on experience across multiple areas of the business, from Alternative Investments and Trading to Advisory, Client Service, and Financial Planning.

One of the most unexpected opportunities? "I was able to create 55 portfolio investment reviews that were directly presented to clients," Sophie says. "It taught me how to format complex data into clear, concise presentations. Sitting in on alternative investment meetings also gave me a deeper understanding of how advisors make decisions."

The internship showed her how values developed through softball, like work ethic, discipline, and teamwork,  translate into a professional setting. Her favorite part? "The supportive coworkers who encouraged me to learn and grow," Sophie says. "They took time to answer my questions, trusted me with meaningful projects, and made the learning process especially rewarding."

Q: Where did you do your internship and what was your role?
A: I was a wealth management intern at Corient, in their Newport Beach, CA office.

Q: What's something you learned that you didn't expect?
A: I was given the opportunity to create 55 portfolio investment reviews that were directly presented to clients, teaching me how to format complex data into a clear, concise presentation. I also had the chance to sit in on alternative investment meetings, which allowed me to further understand how advisors determine which investments to participate in. It was amazing to learn from all the in-house teams Corient has, as I was exposed to each facet of the business. These included Alternative Investments, Trading, Advisory, Client Service, and Financial Planning.
Q: How do you think this experience helped you grow professionally and/or personally?
A: This experience showed me how the values I've developed through softball, notably work ethic, discipline, and teamwork, translate into a professional setting. Collaborating with different teams and taking initiative on projects helped me build my confidence and adaptability in a work environment.

Q: What was your favorite part of the experience?
A: I had amazing, supportive coworkers who encouraged me to learn and grow. They took time out of their days to answer any questions I had and made me feel comfortable asking those questions and making mistakes. I was trusted with meaningful, client-facing projects, which made the learning process especially rewarding.
