STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Harvard senior Benjamin Ungar completed his career with
All-America first-team status as he finished third in the epee at
the NCAA Fencing Championships, hosted by Penn State at the
Ashenfelter Multi-Sport
Facility. With the second
All-America selection of his career, Ungar extended Harvard's
streak to four seasons of earning at least one All-America
choice.
Harvard finished the men's portion of the NCAA Championships in
10th with 36 points, while the Nittany Lions stand first with
98.
Ungar,
who entered Friday in first place after winning 11 of 14 bouts
Thursday, won four more matches at the second day of competition to
finish the preliminary rounds with a 15-8 record, good for third
place. The Harvard co-captain managed 32 touches in rounds
5-7 and boasted a +27 indicator rating entering the
semifinals.
In
the semifinal round, Ungar, the 2006 individual national champion
in the epee, faced Slava Zingerman of Wayne State.
Zingerman, the No. 2 seed, topped Ungar, who was seeded third in
the championship bracket, by a 15-11 margin to advance to the
gold-medal bout.
In
the men's sabre, freshman Valentin
Staller nearly qualified for All-America honorable mention
as he finished 15th with nine victories, three of which came in
action Friday. Staller earned 78 touches during the
tournament and posted a -21 indicator rating. Senior
co-captain Kai Itameri-Kinter won
two bouts in the foil Friday, as he placed 20th in the
weapon. Itameri-Kinter accumulated 73 touches overall,
including 26 in rounds 5-7.
Junior
Karl Harmenberg also competed in
the epee and had 66 touches for 23rd place.
Competition
in the NCAA Championships continues Saturday with the beginning of
the women's events. The matches will begin at 9:40
a.m.
