CAMBRIDGE, Mass.
– The Harvard fencing team wrapped up the
2009-10 season with a fifth-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Fencing
Championships with 137 points. The Crimson, which hosted the event
at Gordon Indoor Track, garnered six All-American nods over the
four-day event with the women earning four and two men attaining
the status. Penn State claimed the team title for the
second-straight year with 191 points. St. John's followed
closely with 182 points, good for second. Notre Dame finished in
third, just two points behind the Red Storm.
In the men's sabre, Valentin Staller finished the
competition in sixth, earning him a spot on the All-America second
team. Staller earned 15 victories and boasted a +23 indicator
rating. Freshman Michael Tom also competed for the Crimson in the
sabre, finishing in 21st with six wins.
Freshman Tommasso di Robilant claimed 12th in the men's
foil, garnering All-America honorable mention. The rookie won 11
bouts and sported an indicator rating of +2. Junior Hao Meng
captured 16th in the men's foil with 10 wins on the weekend.
Meng tallied 73 touches throughout the competition.
Sophomore James Hawrot finished in 14th in the men's epee,
while senior Karl Harmenberg claimed 16th in the competition.
Hawrot earned 11 victories and Harmenberg won nine bouts. Hawrot
scored 86 touches over the course of the weekend and Harmenberg
racked up 82 touches.
A total of 144 athletes represented 27 teams at the 2010 NCAA
Fencing Championships. More than 700 people attended the four-day
event and 19 members of the media covered the championships.
