ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 5 Harvard men's fencing team is in a four-way tie for first after day one of the Ivy League Championships, as the Crimson owns a 2-1 record through three matches.
Harvard is tied for first with Columbia, Penn and Princeton.
In its opening bouts, the Crimson defeated Yale 22-5 and four Harvard student-athletes finished with a 3-0 mark. Duncan O'Brien, Stephen Mageras, Nicolas Simko and Peregrine Badger each topped their opponents in their respective weapons.
Harvard fell behind to Princeton after going 1-8 in the saber, but the foil squad took the majority of its matches to pull the Crimson within 12-6. The epeeists of Peregrine Badger, Albert Chien, and Nicolas Simko finished 3-5, putting the overall team record at 17-10, in favor of the Tigers.
The Crimson finished day one with ease as it breezed past Brown, 18-9. Foil athletes of Jerry Chang, Michael Woo, and Mageras swept the Bears, 9-0.
Harvard will take on Columbia and Penn in the final day of the championships at 11:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m., respectively.
