Men’s Fencing to Travel to Connecticut for Sacred Heart Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard men's fencing team will travel to Fairfield, Conn., to compete at the Sacred Heart Invitational. The one-day event is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 5.

The Crimson (3-0) will compete in five different matches throughout the day at the invitational, following its 13th consecutive Beanpot victory on Nov. 17.

Harvard will take on Vassar College (10 a.m.), Penn State (11 a.m.), Sacred Heart (12 p.m.), New Jersey Institute of Technology (2 p.m.) and New York University (3 p.m.).

The Crimson has experienced success against the field, leading the all-time series against Vassar (14-0), Sacred Heart (14-0) and NJIT (5-0).

Meanwhile, against NYU, Harvard trails the all-time series, 34-19-1, with the first match taking place in February of 1924. The Crimson, however, has been victorious in the last five competitions, and 18 of the last 22 meetings.

Harvard trails the all-time series vs. Penn State by a narrow 15-13 margin since the schools started competing in 1987. The Crimson enters this week having won eight of the last nine matches vs. the Nittany Lions.

In addition to the team competition this weekend, three first-year members of the Crimson foil squad will travel to Leszno, Poland for the Junior World Cup on Dec. 4. The group making the trip to Europe consists of James Chen, Andrew Chung and James Liao.

At The Helm:

Daria Schneider is in her third year as head coach of the Harvard men's and women's fencing programs in 2021-22. In her first season as head coach, Schneider led the men's team to a program-record 20 dual wins and an outright Ivy League Championship. She led the women's team to the NCAA regionals where four fencers placed in the top 10.

Up Next:

Next weekend, Dec. 9-12, the Crimson will send 15 athletes to the December North American Cup in Columbus, Ohio, to compete against some of the country's top fencers in individual competition. The Crimson will travel as a team again to Jamaica, N.Y., where they will compete in a meet hosted by St. John's University on Jan. 22.
