Men’s Fencing Posts Strong Showing at Sacred Heart Invitational

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Harvard men's fencing team had a strong showing at the Sacred Heart Invitational on Sunday, Dec. 5, in Fairfield, Conn.

The Crimson went 4-1 on the day in its five matches, bringing its record to 7-1 on the season.

Harvard started each match down 3-0 due to missing three athletes who were competing in the men's foil world cup in Poland this weekend.

The day started with a win over Vassar College, 21-6. The Crimson sabre squad had a great performance, besting the Brewers, 8-1. Daniel Solomon and Mitchell Saron both had +10 touch differentials in their three wins in the match.

Next up, the Crimson fell short to Penn State, 14-13, in a tightly contested battle. The sabre squad cruised, winning, 8-1, but it wasn't enough to gain the advantage over the Nittany Lions.

In the third match of the day, Harvard got back to its winning ways with a 19-8 victory over the hosts Sacred Heart. Sabre Filip Dolegiewicz did not surrender a touch, winning three bouts 5-0.

Next, the Crimson faced off against New Jersey Institute of Technology, which ended in an 18-9 win for Harvard. Dolegiewicz showed more of the same, not giving up a touch on his way to three more wins. Saron and Jonas Hansen both went unbeaten to help secure the win over NJIT.

In the final match of the day against New York University, the Crimson grabbed its fourth win of the day in a tight match, 15-12. Saron and Hansen grabbed the pivotal clinching bouts to lift the Crimson to victory.

Harvard Highlights

  • The Crimson sabre squad posted a 38-7 record through the five matches and outscored their opponents by 106 touches.
  • Saron went a perfect 12-0 on the day in his sabre bouts, with a team-high touch differential of +36.
  • Jason Oh posted a +27-touch differential in Connecticut, outscoring his opponents 60-33 and finished with a 10-3 record.
  • Dolegiewicz tallied a +33-touch differential while finishing with an 8-1 record. He did not allow a touch in six consecutive bouts between the Sacred Heart and NJIT matches.

Up Next

  • Next weekend, Dec. 9-12, the Crimson will send 15 athletes to the North American Cup in Columbus, Ohio, to compete against some of the country's top fencers in an individual competition. The Crimson will travel as a team again on Jan. 22, to Jamaica, N.Y., where they will compete in a meet hosted by St. John's University.
