Men’s Fencing Grabs Two Wins at St. John’s Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The sixth-ranked Harvard men's fencing team (9-3) traveled down to Jamaica, N.Y., for the St. John's Invitational this past weekend to compete against some of the top competition in the nation.
 
The Crimson matched up against four of the top 10 teams in the country, posting a 2-2 record throughout the meet.
 
Mitchell Saron won a team-high 10 bouts on the day and recorded an overall record of 10-2 to push his season total to 28-4.
 
Andrew Chung found success, competing in his first match since the Beanpot in November. Chung went 8-4 to improve his season total to 12-4.
 
The Crimson began the day with Ivy League foe and No. 2 Columbia, coming out on top 16-11. The sabre squad led the way for the Crimson, posting an 8-1 record against the Lions.
 
Harvard then took on top-ranked Notre Dame and battled to the end, coming up short 15-12. Each weapon fell one bout short by a score of 5-4.
 
Next up was No. 3 Ohio State which also bested the Crimson 15-12. The foil squad fought to a 6-3 victory, but it was not enough to come out on top.
 
Wrapping up the invitational, the Crimson competed against the hosts and No. 8 St John's. All three weapons did their part, with sabre winning 6-3 and epee and foil winning 5-4, for a final tally of 16-11 in favor of Harvard.
 

Individual Action

In other news for the Crimson, James Chen competed in the Junior World Cup in Aix-En-Provence, France this past weekend and finished 12th. James Liao also competed, finishing 47th.
 

Next Up

The Crimson will return home to take on New York University for the second time this season on Jan. 29, at 1:00 p.m., at the Malkin Athletic Center in Cambridge.
