Baseball Begins Ivy League Play at Cornell with Friday-Saturday Series

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University baseball opens Ivy League play with a three-game series at Cornell University with a doubleheader on Friday, Mar. 25 beginning at 11:30 a.m. and a single game on Saturday, Mar. 26 at noon as the Crimson will compete in an Ivy League regular season game for the first time in 1,054 days and play an Ivy opponent for the first time in 1,041 days.

What to Know: Team Notes

  • The Crimson (8-7) will meet the Big Red (3-8) for a three-game set at Hoy Field in the Ivy League opener for both teams. Harvard will compete in an Ivy League regular season game for the first time since May 6, 2019 – a span of 1,054 days.
  • The Crimson will meet an Ivy opponent for the first time since playing Columbia in the Ivy League Championship Series on May 19, 2019 – a span of 1,041 days.
  • Harvard's weekend rotation is set to feature junior left-hander Tim Williamson (2-1, 4.05 ERA) in game one, first-year right-hander Sean Matson (1-1, 5.27 ERA) in game two, and TBA in game three. Cornell is scheduled to throw LHP Spencer Edwards (1-3, 10.90 ERA) in game one, TBA in game two, and RHP Luke Yacinich (1-1, 7.77 ERA).
  • In the first NEIBA Division I Coaches Poll of the year, Harvard ranks at No. 3, trailing only No. 1 Connecticut and No. 2 Northeastern as the top teams in New England. No. 4 Central Connecticut and No. 5 Bryant round out the season's first poll.
  • Harvard leads Cornell in the all-time series, 107-54. In 2019, the Crimson took two of three from the Big Red in the last series between the two clubs.
  • In a three-game series at UCLA (Mar. 18-20), Harvard captured the second game in a 5-0 shutout and nearly took game three before falling in 11 innings, 2-3. In the game two win, Harvard's pitching staff held the Bruins to one hit. Earlier in the week on Mar. 15, the Crimson topped Fresno State, 8-2.
  • Harvard closed the Cal Poly series (Mar. 11-13) with a pair of wins to split the four-game set with the Mustangs. The Crimson took game three (4-3) and game four (9-4). Harvard outhit the Mustangs, 37-27, in the series with double-figure hits in each of the last three games of the set (11, 12,11).
  • Over the team's eight-game, 10-day road trip to the state of California, junior Logan Bravo hit .455 (15-for-33) with five doubles, five RBIs, five runs, and a homer. Sophomore Chris Snopek hit .382, sophomore Jay Driver threw 6.1 innings of scoreless relief, and sophomore Uday Narottam tossed 5.2 innings of scoreless relief. 

What to Know: Batting Notes

  • Sophomore Chris Snopek leads the Crimson in batting average (.386), on-base percentage (.444), hits (22), and RBIs (eight). He paces the team with eight multi-hit games on the year. Snopek hit .438 (7-for-16) in the Cal Poly series after he hit .500 with three RBIs, three runs, and a double in the Rice series. He totaled three hits, three runs scored, two RBIs, and his first career home run against Miami.
  • Junior Logan Bravo has posted a .345 batting average and .397 on-base percentage on the season, while leading the team in doubles (seven), slugging percentage (.517), and runs (nine). Bravo leads the Ivy League in doubles. He has tallied eight multi-hit games on the year and is on a seven-game hit streak. In the UCLA series, he hit .500 (7-for-14) with a home run, two doubles, an RBI, and three runs scored. Bravo hit .400 (6-for-15) in the Cal Poly series, including three doubles. He went 5-for-13 (.385) with two doubles and four runs scored in the Rice series.
  • Sophomore Jake Berger has reached base safely in 10 straight games and is currently on a six-game hitting streak. He has registered a .365 on-base percentage alongside a team-high nine runs scored, four doubles, and six RBIs.
  • First-year George Cooper leads the team with three home runs on the year and is on a seven-game hitting streak. He hit his first two collegiate home runs in the Rice series, launching lead-off home runs in both game three and game four.
  • First-year Sawyer Feller has posted six RBIs and eight hits on the year. He hit .417 with four RBIs in the Rice series. Feller tallied three hits, two runs, two RBIs, and his first collegiate home run in the Miami series.
  • Junior Zach Brown tallied a team-high three RBIs in the Miami series. In game one, he went 3-for-5 with a double and a two-run home run that gave the Crimson a 7-6 lead in the seventh inning.

What to Know: Pitching Notes

  • Junior left-handed pitcher Tim Williamson has notched a 4.05 ERA, 18 strikeouts, and a .176 opponent batting average over 20.0 innings on the season. He earned Ivy League Pitcher of the Week honors after throwing 6.0 shutout innings with six strikeouts in a victory over UCLA (Mar. 19). He also earned a win at Rice (Mar. 5), tossing 6.0 innings and permitting one run on three hits with seven strikeouts.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Adam Stone has posted a 3.95 ERA with 16 strikeouts over 13.2 innings, while holding opponents to a .220 batting average. Against Rice (Mar. 4), he threw 5.0 shutout innings, striking out eight. He made his collegiate debut against Miami (Feb. 25), striking out four batters over 4.0 innings.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Jaren Zinn earned the win in game three against Cal Poly Mar. 12) behind a career-high 11 strikeouts. Zinn threw 6.0 innings and allowed just one run on four hits and two walks. He gained Ivy League Pitcher of the Week honors for the effort. For the season, Zinn leads the team with 23 strikeouts over 15.0 innings.
  • Sophomore right-hander Jay Driver has thrown 9.1 innings of relief this season without allowing a run, posting two saves, 17 strikeouts, and a 0.54 WHIP. He earned saves at Rice (Mar. 4) and at Cal Poly (Mar. 12) and has allowed just one walk this year.
  • Sophomore left-hander Uday Narottam has tossed 9.0 innings of scoreless relief this year, registering a 0.67 WHIP. He earned a save against Cal Poly (Mar. 13), throwing 3.2 innings without allowing a hit.
  • First-year right-handed pitcher Sean Matson has thrown 13.2 innings this season, making appearances as a reliever and starter. He has 16 strikeouts and a 5.27 ERA. Matson earned his first career win at Cal Poly (Mar. 13), pitching 5.1 innings with five strikeouts. He threw 4.0 innings of relief against Miami (Feb. 26), permitting just one run on two hits with six strikeouts.
  • Sophomore right-hander Chris Clark has not allowed a run in five of his six relief appearances this season while first-year right-hander Tanner Smith has not permitted a run in each of his last four relief outings.

At the Helm

Bill Decker, The Joseph J. O'Donnell '67 Head Coach for Harvard Baseball, enters his 10th season as the leader of the Crimson. The 2019 Ivy League Coach of the Year and 2019 NEIBA Coach of the Year led the Crimson to the 2019 Ivy League title. He holds a 133-178 record at Harvard and a 630-435 career record as a collegiate head coach.
