Ithaca, N.Y. – Harvard men's fencing got off to a roaring 2-0 start on day one of the Ivy League Championships on Saturday, Feb. 11, defeating both Penn and Yale.
The Crimson opened the event against Penn. The sabre team would immediately set the tone for the tournament by going a perfect 9-0 against the Quakers after
Filip Dolegiewicz,
Mitchell Saron and
Matthew Linsky won all three of their bouts. Both the foil and epee squads were also able to edge out wins, securing a Crimson 20-7 victory over the Quakers.
In their second match of the day against Yale, all three squads would earn 7-2 victories to give the Crimson a 21-6 win over the Bulldogs.
Kenji Bravo (foil),
James Chen (foil) and
Jonas Hansen (epee) would each win all three of their bouts in this matchup.
At the conclusion of day one of the Ivy League Championships, the Crimson are locked in at second place in the tournament with a 2-0 record, just narrowly behind Columbia who are 3-0.
Harvard Highlights
- Six Crimson fencers, Filip Dolegiewicz (sabre), Mitchell Saron (sabre), Matthew Linsky (sabre), James Chen (foil), Kenji Bravo (foil) and Jonas Hansen (epee), each earned five wins on the day to lead the team.
- With two wins today, Harvard has surpassed the team record for most wins in a season, now with 21 wins so far this year. The previous record stood at 20 wins set in 2019-20.
- Matthew Linsky currently leads the men's sabre individual championship race after going 5-0 on the day. Mitchell Saron and Filip Dolegiewicz each sit tied for second after posting a 5-1 record.
- Jonas Hansen also leads the men's epee individual championship race after going 5-1 in his bouts.
- Harvard was recently ranked No. 1 in the country in the USFCA Men's Fencing Mid-Season Coaches Poll. Columbia and Princeton, meanwhile, found themselves tied for second in the poll.
- Senior Mitchell Saron (sabre) has been crowned the Ivy individual sabre champion the last two years the event was held (2020, 2022).
- The Crimson's foil squad is now a spectacular 22-1 on the season.
