Baseball Hosts Cornell in Revised Friday-Saturday Series

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University baseball hosts Cornell University in a three-game Ivy League series with a single game on Friday, Apr. 14 at 3:00 p.m. (ESPN+) and a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 15 starting at 11:30 a.m. (ESPN+) as the Crimson enters the weekend having won each of its first three Ivy League series to open its conference slate.

What to Know

  • The Crimson (11-17, 7-2 Ivy) hosts the Big Red (4-19, 3-6 Ivy) at O'Donnell Field as Harvard stands atop the Ivy League standings and has posted a 9-3 record in its last 12 games. As part of Saturday's doubleheader, the Crimson will host its Bark at the Park event.
  • Harvard's weekend rotation is set to feature RHP Jay Driver (0-2, 4.66 ERA) in game one, RHP Chris Clark (3-2, 5.21 ERA) in game two, and RHP Sean Matson (1-2, 6.11 ERA) in game three.
  • Cornell is set to counter with LHP Spencer Edwards (1-2, 6.29 ERA) in game one, RHP Ethan Hamill (0-5, 8.38 ERA) in game two, and LHP Noah Keller (1-4, 5.87 ERA) in game three.
  • Harvard leads Cornell in the all-time series, 110-54. Last year, the Crimson swept a three-game set from the Big Red in Ithaca, New York.
  • The Crimson earned its third straight Ivy League series win to open its conference slate as it swept Dartmouth from Apr. 8-9, taking 6-3, 10-6, and 9-1 decisions. Harvard totaled 38 hits over the three games, notching double-figure hits in all three contests. Each of Harvard's starting pitchers threw at least 7.0 innings in the series.
  • In the semifinals of The Baseball Beanpot, the Crimson came back from an early 2-0 deficit to tie the game at 2-2 and then plated two runs in the top of the ninth to overcome a 3-2 deficit, snapping a 10-game win streak for the Huskies, who entered the contest with a 22-4 record. In the championship game, Harvard dropped a narrow 5-4 decision to No. 11 Boston College.
  • In its first home Ivy series of the season, Harvard swept a Sunday doubleheader from Princeton to gain a 2-1 series win over the Tigers. The Crimson won games two (11-8) and three (9-6) of the series to take the set. Harvard totaled 29 runs, 27 hits, and 22 walks over the course of the three-game series.
  • In Harvard's home opener, Crimson relievers combined to allow just one run over 6.2 innings, and senior Hunter Baldwin and first-year Gio Colasante each drove in two runs as Harvard beat Holy Cross, 6-5, at O'Donnell Field on Mar. 28.
  • In its Ivy League opening series, Harvard earned a 2-1 road series win over Penn in Philadelphia. The Crimson captured the series opener, 3-2, in 10 innings before claiming a 7-3 decision in the series finale. Junior Jake Berger and senior Logan Bravo each hit home runs in the opener before sophomore Sean Matson and first-year Callan Fang combined to limit the Quakers to three runs in the finale.
  • Harvard ranks 12th in the NCAA in doubles per game (2.46) as a team while junior Peter Messervy stands 12th in the nation in doubles per game (0.48) as an individual. Messervy leads the Ivy League with 13 doubles. Harvard has hit at least two doubles in 22 games this year and knocked a season-high six in game two vs. FIU (Mar. 4).
  • As a team, Harvard leads the Ivy League in doubles (69) and stands third in average (.271), runs (177), hits (267), and home runs (27). In Ivy play, Harvard ranks second in doubles (21) and RBIs (62), while sitting third in average (.290), runs (66), and hits (91). The Crimson has tallied double-figure runs in five games and double-figure hits in 12 games in 2023.
  • Junior Jake Berger has posted a .305 batting average alongside 32 hits, 16 runs, seven doubles, and five home runs. He paces the league in sacrifice flies (four) and ranks seventh in homers (five). In Ivy only play, he stands fifth in average (.389), third in slugging (.750), third in OPS (1.215), third in hits (14), second in RBIs (12), second in doubles (four), and second in homers (three). He hit a key two-run home run in the Crimson's 3-2 win in 10 innings in game one at Penn (Mar. 24). Berger notched four hits in game two vs. Princeton (Apr. 4).
  • Junior Ben Rounds has posted a .298 batting average, 31 hits, 21 runs, eight doubles, five home runs, and 27 RBIs. He stands seventh in the Ancient Eight in home runs (five), fifth in walks (17), second in sacrifice flies (three), eighth in RBIs (27), and 10th in doubles (eeight). In Ivy only play, he leads the conference in walks (10) and stands fifth in OBP (.488), seventh in OPS (1.094), seventh in runs (10), and sixth in RBIs (10). Rounds notched a season-best four hits in game three at FAU (Mar. 12).
  • Junior Peter Messervy leads the Ivy League with 13 doubles and ranks 12th in the NCAA with 0.48 doubles per game. Messervy stands third in the conference in walks (18) and ninth in runs (24). In Ivy only play, he sits seventh in OBP (.475). Overall, he has hit .291 with 30 hits, 24 runs, and 12 RBIs. Messervy hit a go-ahead, bases-clearing double to help lead Harvard to a game two win over Dartmouth (Apr. 8).
  • Senior Logan Bravo has notched a .297 average with 33 hits, 23 runs, eight doubles, four homers, and 17 RBIs. In Ivy only play, he ranks eighth in the conference in average (.361), sixth in OBP (.477), eighth in OPS (1.088), seventh in runs (10), sixth in hits (13), and sixth in RBIs (10). He tallied three two-hit games in the Texas A&M-CC series (Mar. 16-18) before a 3-for-5 effort with the go-ahead home run in the 10th inning in the series opener with Penn (Mar. 24).
  • Senior Hunter Baldwin has hit .313 on the season with 25 hits, 19 runs, five doubles, and 14 RBIs. In conference play, he has posted a .346 average, nine hits, seven runs, and six RBIs. Baldwin launched a go-ahead grand slam in the ninth inning in Harvard's game one win at Dartmouth (Apr. 8), blasting his second career homer and first since March 2019.
  • Senior Will Jacobsen serves as a two-way player for the Crimson. At the plate, he has hit .273 with 18 hits, 11 runs, seven doubles, three homers, and 10 RBIs. On the mound, he has thrown 24.2 innings over seven appearances and six starts. As a hitter, he posted six RBIs in game two of the FIU series (Mar. 4), and as a pitcher, he allowed just two runs over 6.0 innings in the Beanpot semifinals against Northeastern (Apr. 4).
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Chris Clark ranks 11th in the NCAA in strikeouts per nine innings (13.97), while ranking first in the Ivy League in strikeouts (59). He has tallied seven or more strikeouts in six of his seven starts in 2023, including a career-high 11 strikeouts at Dartmouth (Apr. 8). Clark has registered 59 strikeouts over 38.0 innings pitched on the season. In Ivy play, he has posted a league-leading 29 strikeouts over 19.0 innings.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Jay Driver ranks fifth in the Ivy League in strikeouts (43) and has notched a 4.66 ERA, throwing 38.2 innings on the year. He has posted six or more strikeouts in five of his last six starts.
  • Senior left-handed pitcher Harrison Stovern ranks fifth in the Ivy League in saves (two) after notching saves against Holy Cross (Mar. 28) and Northeastern (Apr. 4). Over his last six outings, he has allowed just two earned runs over 9.2 innings.
