CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 22 Harvard Men's Swimming and Diving extended its lead at the 2024 Ivy League Championships after it won all four swimming events on Thursday at Blodgett Pool. The Crimson earned gold medals in the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 200 free relay to boost its team point total to 590.
Following two days of action, Harvard leads second-place Princeton (474), Yale (382), Penn (308), Brown (288), Columbia (269), Cornell (230) and Dartmouth (149).
Prelims Notes
- Harvard opened the morning by taking four of the top-8 and six of the top-10 spots in the 500 free. Ben Littlejohn, competing in the event for the first time this season, posted the fastest time in the field, clocking in at 4:16.78, which was the third-fastest time in program history. Others to make the A-final were Cole Kuster (5th, 4:20.46, NCAA B-cut), Shane Washart (7th, 4:21.65, NCAA B-cut) and Simon Lamar (8th, season-best 4:23.06). Filip Lanyi (9th, 4:23.22), Harris Durham (10th, 4:23.79) and Anders Airstars (14th, 4:24.66) qualified for the B-final.
- In the 200 IM, Will Grant set a program record and finished in first place with an NCAA B-cut time of 1:43.40. The senior entered with a personal record of 1:44.26, which was third in school history. His prelims performance surpassed Jake Johnson's record of 1:43.82, established in 2022.
- The Crimson advanced three swimmers into the A-final. Marcus Holmquist finished in third (19.83), with David Greeley (19.87) and Sonny Wang (19.94) coming in fifth and seventh place, respectively. Oliver Pilkinton, who qualified for the B-final, had his top performance of the year, finishing in 20.08.
- Adam Wesson finished in first place in the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 338.55. The Crimson also had Luke Foster (6th, 303.20), Denny Gulia-Janovski (8th, 294.75) and Jack Holland (9th, season-best 287.75) finish in the top 10.
Finals Notes
- Littlejohn one-upped himself in the 500-free final, improving on his prelim time by clocking in at 4:15.20 to win the event. Washart (5th, season-best 4:19.67) and Kuster (6th, season-best 4:20.41) also had better showings in the final, with Lamar coming in eighth place (4:24.94).
- Littlejohn's 4:15.20 was a Blodgett Pool record, breaking the previous mark originally set by Harvard's Brennan Novak in 2018 (4:16.56).
- In the B-final of the 500 free, Durham (4:22.71) and Lanyi (4:22.72) went 1-2, posting season-best times. Aistars, meanwhile, finished in fourth with a season-best 4:24.11.
- After winning the prelims of the 200 IM, Grant returned to the pool deck and replicated his performance with a pool-record performance of 1:42.83. The senior's victory gave the Crimson four wins through four events.
- In the 50 free, first-year Wang emerged victorious after putting up a season-best and NCAA B-cut time of 19.61. Greeley and Holmquist finished in a tie for fifth place as both touched the pad in 19.81. For Greeley, the time was a season best. Pilkinton, meanwhile, came in sixth in the B-final (20.12).
- In the 1-meter diving final, Wesson finished in fourth place with a score of 315.05, with Foster (306.90) and Gulia-Janovski (302.25) coming in fifth and sixth, respectively.
- In the final event, the Harvard 200-free relay quartet of Wang, Holmquist, Greeley, and Aayush Deshpande helped the Crimson sweep the swimming events for the second day in a row, posting a winning time of 1:17.41.
