Baseball Plays at Yale in Final Series of Season

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University baseball plays at Yale University for a three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 11 at 11:30 a.m. (ESPN+) and a single game on Sunday, May 12 at noon (ESPN+) at George H.W. Bush '48 Field in the Crimson's final series of the season.

What to Know

  • The Crimson (12-24, 8-10 Ivy) meets the Bulldogs (16-22, 9-9 Ivy) in the final regular season series for both teams. Harvard trails Yale by one game in the conference standings.
  • Harvard's weekend rotation will feature RHP Sean Matson (3-2, 3.07 ERA) in game one, RHP Truman Pauley (0-4, 6.57 ERA) in game two, and RHP Callan Fang (3-3, 4.70 ERA) in game three.
  • Yale will counter with RHP Colton Shaw (3-7, 4.30 ERA) in game one, RHP Daniel Cohen (3-3, 5.01 ERA) in game two, and LHP Reid Easterly (2-6, 4.48 ERA) in game three.
  • Harvard leads Yale in the all-time series, 206-190-1. The two teams first met in 1868. The Crimson took last season's series from the Bulldogs, 2-1.
  • The six members of the Crimson's senior class – Jake Berger, Porter Jordheim, Peter Messervy, Uday Narottam, Ben Rounds, and Chris Snopek – will compete in their final series with Harvard. The Crimson recognized the group for Senior Day prior to game two of the doubleheader with Penn (Apr. 27).
  • As part of its doubleheader with Penn (Apr. 27), Harvard remembered the late Joseph J. O'Donnell '67, who passed away this past January and for whom the Crimson's home field and head coaching position are named.
  • The Crimson won its second straight conference series with a 2-1 series win over Dartmouth (Apr. 20-21) behind a 9-2 win in game one and a 13-5 victory in game three. Junior William Lybrook tallied three home runs and seven RBIs in the series while senior Jake Berger hit .500 (6-for-12). As a team, Harvard hit .333 in the series, while the Crimson's pitching staff limited the Big Green to a .230 opponent average.
  • Harvard posted season highs in runs (17), RBIs (17), and hits (19) in its 17-14 win over Stonehill (Apr. 16). Seniors Peter Messervy (five RBIs) and Jake Berger (four RBIs) combined for nine RBIs in the game as the Crimson plated six runs in the top of the ninth to take the victory over the Skyhawks.
  • The Crimson took a 2-1 series win over Princeton (Apr. 13-14) behind a 3-2 win in game one and 14-2 victory in game three. For the series, Harvard's pitching staff registered a 2.70 ERA, including ERAs under 2.00 from sophomore Callan Fang (0.00 ERA, 7.0 IP, eight strikeouts), junior Sean Matson (1.29 ERA, 7.0 IP, 12 strikeouts), and first-year Truman Pauley (1.69 ERA, 5.1 IP, six strikeouts).
  • A margin of three runs or fewer has decided 11 of Harvard's 18 Ivy League games, including six one-run games and an extra-innings contest.
  • Senior outfielder Ben Rounds has posted a .420 average, .518 OBP, eight home runs, 32 RBIs, 58 hits, 43 runs, and 15 doubles on the season. He ranks first in the Ivy League in average (.420) and OBP (.518), second in OPS (1.235) and hits (58), third in slugging (.717), fourth in runs (43) and doubles (15), and eighth in home runs (eight). In the NCAA, he stands fifth in average (.420), 16th in OBP (.518), 25th in hits per game (1.61), and 26th in doubles per game (0.71). In Ivy only play, he has hit .403 with 27 hits, 17 RBIs, eight doubles, a .506 OBP, and five home runs, while ranking third in the league in average (.403) and OBP (.776). For the season, he has posted 18 multi-hit games.
  • Senior Jake Berger has tallied a .291 average, 28 runs, 39 hits, seven doubles, and a .367 OBP on the year. In Ivy play, he has hit .284 with 15 runs, 19 hits, and nine RBIs. He went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and four runs at Stonehill (Apr. 16) before hitting .500 (6-for-12) in the Dartmouth series (Apr. 20-21). Berger has posted 11 multi-hit games on the year.
  • Junior George Cooper – who has reached base safely in the last 18 games – has hit .297 on the season with 44 hits, 23 RBIs, 24 runs, five doubles, and three triples. He ranks second in the Ivy League in triples (three). In Ivy only play, he has posted a .337 average, 28 hits, 13 RBIs, 14 runs, and a .368 OBP. For the season, he has tallied 16 multi-hit games and a team-best nine multi-RBI games.
  • Junior catcher William Lybrook has posted a .349 average with 30 hits, 24 RBIs, 25 runs, and a .420 OBP. He ranks eighth in the conference in average (.349), slugging (.651), and OPS (1.071). In Ivy only play, he has notched a .375 average with a .446 OBP, 21 hits, 20 runs, 15 RBIs, and five home runs. Lybrook hit a home run in each game of the Dartmouth series (Apr. 20-21) and in each of the two games in the Penn series (Apr. 27-18) in which he played. He went 2-for-3 with four RBIs, three runs, and a home run in game two vs. Western Carolina (Mar. 16).
  • Junior outfielder Matt Giberti has notched a .278 average on the year with a .356 OBP and 20-for-22 mark on stolen base attempts. He leads the Ivy League in stolen bases (20) and ranks sixth in the NCAA in stolen bases per game (0.71). Giberti earned Ivy League Player of the Week after hitting .556 (5-for-9) with four runs, three doubles, and a .636 OBP in the Penn State series (Mar. 8-10).
  • Senior infielder Chris Snopek ranks second on the team in RBIs (31) on the year with a .224 average, 30 hits, six home runs, and 22 runs. For the season, he has posted seven multi-RBI games and eight multi-hit games. He went 5-for-13 with three runs and a home run in The Citadel (Mar. 2-3) series. Snopek finished 3-for-5 with two homers and four RBIs in game two at Western Carolina (Mar. 16) and tallied a season-high five RBIs in back-to-back games vs. Brown (Mar. 31) and Boston College (Apr. 2).
  • Junior right-hander Sean Matson has posted a 3.07 ERA with 67 strikeouts over 55.2 innings on the year. He ranks first in the Ivy League in ERA (3.07) and opponent average (.220) and third in strikeouts (67) and strikeouts looking (18). In Ivy only play, he has notched a 2.91 ERA with 45 strikeouts over 34.0 innings, ranking fifth in the league in ERA (2.91) and strikeouts (45). Matson tallied a career-high 12 strikeouts, while allowing one run over 7.0 innings at Princeton (Apr. 13). He earned Ivy League Pitcher of the Week on Mar. 4 after throwing 6.1 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts at The Citadel (Mar. 2).
  • Sophomore right-hander Callan Fang leads the Ivy League in strikeouts (80), while ranking second in second in strikeouts looking (20), sixth in ERA (4.70), sixth in innings (59.1), and seventh in opponent average (.242). During Ivy only play, he has registered a 2.77 ERA with 56 strikeouts over 39.0 innings, ranking first in the conference in strikeouts (56), second in ERA (2.77), and third in opponent average (.201). In the NCAA, he ranks 22nd in strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.33), 30th in strikeouts per nine (12.13), and 43rd in strikeouts (80).
  • Fang has earned Ivy League Pitcher of the Week twice during Ivy League play. He captured the award on Apr. 1 after compiling a career-high 12 strikeouts over 7.0 innings in the win over Brown (Mar. 30) and won again on Apr. 15 after throwing 7.0 scoreless innings in a victory over Princeton (Apr. 14). He tallied another 12 strikeouts in game three at Cornell (Apr. 7) and notched 11 strikeouts against Dartmouth (Apr. 21). Fang has also contributed at the plate, hitting .304 with 14 hits, seven RBIs, six runs, and a home run.
  • Junior right-hander Cole Cleary has posted a 5.74 ERA with 17 strikeouts over 15.2 innings in Ivy League play. He earned his first collegiate save in game two vs. Cornell (Apr. 7) and picked up another save with a career-high five strikeouts vs. Princeton (Apr. 13). Overall, he has notched an 8.42 ERA with two saves and 25 strikeouts over 25.2 innings. Cleary ranks seventh in the conference in saves (two).
  • First-year right-hander Truman Pauley has registered a 4.30 ERA with 23 strikeouts over 23.0 innings in Ivy League play. Overall, he has notched a 6.57 ERA with 35 strikeouts over 38.1 innings, while ranking third in the conference in opponent average (.236). Pauley tallied six strikeouts over 5.1 innings at Princeton (Apr. 13) and notched five strikeouts over 5.2 innings vs. Penn (Apr. 27).
  • As a team in the conference, Harvard ranks third in opponent average (.271), fourth in ERA (7.18), and fourth in strikeouts (309) on the mound, while standing third in average (.286), runs (247), hits (366), and RBIs (225) at the plate.
  • In Ivy only play, the Crimson ranks third in ERA (4.98), strikeouts (173), and opponent average (.254) on the mound, while standing third in average (.289) at the plate.
  • For the season, Harvard has posted double-figure runs nine times and double-figure hits 20 times.
