NEW HAVEN, Conn. – No. 23 Harvard Men's Swimming and Diving won a pair of races on the first day of the annual Harvard-Yale-Princeton (HYP) meet at Yale's Kiphuth Exhibition Pool. With Friday behind it, the Crimson leads the Bulldogs, 108-75, but finds itself trailing the Tigers, 96.50-89.50.
How It Happened
- Raphael Tourette led the Crimson to begin the day, finishing in second place on the one-meter diving board with a score of 324.00. Adam Wesson, meanwhile, posted the field's fourth-best effort (303.30). Princeton's Aidan Wang won the competition with a 370.40.
- Harvard recorded another runner-up showing, this time coming in the first swimming event of the day – the 200 free relay. Sonny Wang, Marre Gattnar, Evan Croley and David Greeley were narrowly bested by Princeton, 1:18.16-1:18.30. The Crimson's time was its second best of the season, falling short of the 1:18.12 that Wang, Greeley, Oliver Pilkinton and Gattnar swam at the Minnesota Invitational.
- Shane Washart was the top Harvard swimmer in the 1,000 free with a fourth-place time of 9:09.16. Washart's performance was the best of any Harvard swimmer this season and wiped out his previous best of 9:17.95. Yale's Noah Millard won the race in 8:54.17.
- The 200 free saw Harvard finish 3-4-5, with Greeley leading the pack at 1:35.95. Harris Durham was fourth (1:36.00) and Ben Littlejohn fifth (1:36.06) after swimming their best races of the season. Mitchell Schott (Princeton) won with a time of 1:32.80.
- Anthony Rincon got the Crimson into the win column as he took the 100 back in 46.21. The 2024 Paris Olympian improved upon his previous personal best (46.38) to strengthen his hold on the third-best time in school history. First-year Adriano Arioti, meanwhile, tied for third with a 47.69 performance.
- Arioti's classmate, Joshua Chen, was the top Harvard swimmer in the 100 breast. The first-year clocked in at 53.97 to place third. Charlie Egeland of Yale won the event (52.49).
- Harvard put three swimmers in the top five of the 200 fly. David Schmitt was the runner-up to Schott (1:41.42) after finishing the race in 1:43.54. Arioti (1:46.08) came in third place and Mert Iravul was fifth with a time of 1:47.92.
- Wang missed out on the 50-free win by 0.02 seconds. The sophomore completed the event in 19.38, which was the fourth-best time in program history. Yale's Nicholas Finch edged Wang with a 19.36.
- First-year Richard Poplawski III (3:51.35) and Eric Lee (3:51.41) came in third and fourth place, respectively, in the 400 IM. Both times were season bests. Noah Sech of Princeton won the event (3:47.46).
- Harvard closed the night with a victory in the 400 medley relay. Rincon, Chen, Schmitt and Greeley combined to post a season-best time of 3:08.40. Yale came in second at 3:08.78.
