PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Harvard Men's Swimming and Diving finished the 2025 Ivy League Championships in second place, ending a seven-season run that ended with it lifting the Bob Kiphuth Trophy.
The Crimson earned a score of 1,262.50 points, trailing only Princeton (1,330). The two schools finished ahead of Yale (1,212.50), Brown (927.50), Cornell (912.50), Columbia (854.50), Penn (701.50) and Dartmouth (571).
Harvard put forth a valiant effort to get within title contention after it found itself in third place and 126 points behind the leader. A huge third day got the Crimson back into the title conversation, and with four events to go, it was tied with Princeton at 1,038.50 points. Yale was third with 1,037.50 points.
The Crimson fought until the end, as evidenced by its two runner-up performances in the final two swimming events, but fell short as the Tigers pulled away to close the four-day meet.
How It Happened
- Shane Washart finished in 11th place in the 1,650 free with a time of 15:18.30. The senior's season-best time was nine seconds faster than his top previous top time of 15:27.96, which was accomplished at the Minnesota Invitational on Dec. 7.
- In the A-final of the 200 back, Anthony Rincon finished as the runner-up with a personal-record 1:40.60, which was the third-best time in school history. First-year Adriano Arioti, meanwhile, was a bronze winner, clocking in at 1:42.09. Earlier in the day, Arioti posted a prelim time of 1:41.37, marking the fifth-fastest effort by any Harvard swimmer in program history.
- First-year Eric Lee and senior Aayush Deshpande represented the Crimson in the B-final of the 200 back and finished in fourth (1:44.78) and seventh (1:45.46), respectively. Both of their times were season bests.
- The Crimson had three swimmers in the A-final of the 100 free and went 5-6-7, with David Greeley (42.94), Marre Gattnar (43.10) and Sonny Wang (43.14) all posting NCAA B-standard times. In the prelims, Gattnar recorded the fourth-best time in school history (42.83), with Wang right behind at 42.84.
- Evan Croley finished in second place of the 100-free B-final, completing the race in 43.14. The first-year's time was the 10th-fastest in school history and an NCAA B-cut. Harris Durham took fourth in the C-final with a time of 43.88. The senior logged a season-best effort in the prelims (43.82) earlier in the day.
- Harvard had one athlete in the 200 breast and first-year Joshua Chen won the B-final in 1:55.80. The performance was the fifth-best in program history.
- David Schmitt reset his own school record during the prelims of the 200 fly with a meet-record time of 1:40.87. The sophomore erased that record in the final, finishing in 1:40.52, but came in second place. Arioti was fifth (1:43.95) after posting the fifth-best time in program history in the prelims (1:43.51), with Ben Littlejohn coming in eighth place (1:46.15).
- Richard Poplawski III ended the B-final of the 200 fly in fifth place (1:47.03). Earlier in the day, the first-year completed the prelim in a season-best 1:46.16. Eric Lee, meanwhile, was sixth in the C-final (season-best 1:49.24).
- Adam Wesson finished his Ivy League career with a fifth-place finish on the 3-meter board. The senior earned a score of 335.85.
- The Crimson came in second place in the 400 free relay, clocking in at 2:49.76. Despite not winning the race, the quartet of Wang, Gattnar, Greeley and Croley earned an NCAA A-standard time and recorded the second-fastest time in school history.
