Track & Field Returns Home with Harvard Invitational, John Thomas Terrier Classic

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After a successful trip to New York for the Dr. Sander Scorcher last weekend, Harvard track & field is back in Massachusetts this weekend, as the Crimson host the Harvard Invitational at Gordon Indoor Track and will feature at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Friday, Jan. 30 and Saturday, Jan. 31.

WHAT TO KNOW:
  • In its outing in the Big Apple last weekend, Harvard impressed in its first road trip at the Dr. Sander Scorcher.
  • A stellar run in the women's 800m from junior Sophia Gorriaran highlighted the Crimson's time at the Dr. Sander Scorcher. A native of Providence, Rhode Island and a four-time All-American in the women's 800m, Gorriaran finished in fifth in the elite heat with a time of 2:01.30, a mark that leads the nation.
  • Along with her national-leading mark in the women's 800m, Gorriaran also holds a spot in the top 10 in the NCAA in the women's mile, as her time of 4:32.94 at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener ranks 10th.
  • First-year Arpad Kovacs wasted no time making an immediate impact in his Crimson debut, winning the men's 400m invitational with a time of 47.74. A native of Szeged, Hungary, Kovacs ranks second in the Ivy League in the men's 400m this season as his time at the Dr. Sander Scorcher ranks fifth all-time in program history.
  • Harvard ended its time in the Empire State last week on a high note, as Kovacs, sophomore Hudson Allain, junior Amari Turner and senior Justin Levy combined for a time of 3:11.71, a mark that ranks third in the Ivy League and sixth all-time in school history.
  • With his time of 13:38.05 in the 5000m at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, junior Charlie Ortmans holds the Ivy League lead in the event heading into the weekend.
  • A standout in his first meets for the Crimson, first-year Joachim Johnson is making an immediate impact for Harvard in the men's high jump, leading the Ivy League in the event after clearing 2.11m (6'11") at the Beantown Challenge.
  • Senior Fabiola Belibi, the defending Ivy League champion in the women's 60 hurdles, currently leads the Ancient Eight in the event with a time of 8.40 at the HBCU & Ivy Challenge.
  • Seniors Mfoniso Andrew and Jacklynn Okereke, along with junior Alice Mihas are the women's team captains. The men's team captains for this season are seniors Daire Mahon and Jonas Clarke.
  • Jason Saretsky, The William W. "Bill" McCurdy Director of Track and Field/Cross Country, is in 20th season at the helm of the Crimson track & field and cross country programs.

Next weekend sees the Crimson feature in a pair of meets in Boston, taking part in the IC4A/ECAC Championships at the BU Track & Tennis Center and the Riverhawk Invitational at the TRACK at new balance.
